On October 22, 2019, Dr. Schmitz delivered an invited presentation at SOUTHTEC, the top southeast manufacturing trade show. It was held at the Greenville Convention Center in Greenville, SC and is part of the Manufacturing Technology Series produced by SME and AMT. His presentation, Artificial Intelligence for Machining, described the combination of data-driven and physics-based models to provide hybrid physics-guided data learning approaches that improve the accuracy of model predictions. He promoted the adoption of the digital thread that links a part’s solid model that is developed using CAD software, CNC instructions produced using CAM software, and the digital twin, which accompanies the part throughout its lifetime.
