Tony Schmitz presented his winning talk “Biomimetic Manufacturing” in the Blue Sky Competition sessions held at NAMRC 45 (June 6, 2017, University of Southern California). This event honored the legacy and innovative spirit of the late David Dornfeld, PhD, FSME, UC Berkeley. The presentations were intended to be open-ended, causing the community to consider the “outrageous”, presenting new challenges in new application domains requiring new approaches that are likely to stimulate significant new interest, providing bold visions of the future of manufacturing, and defining the research and education needed to achieve the vision.
There were nine finalists from 52 abstract submissions who presented at the conference.
- Tony L. Schmitz, PhD, FSME, University of North Carolina at Charlotte, “Biomimetic Manufacturing”
- Mark P. Mills, Northwestern University, “The Internet of Skills: Online Virtual Simulators for Skilled Trades”
- William C. Harris, Sikorsky Aircraft Corp., “Next Generation Agile Manufacturing to Enable ‘Point of Use’ Customization for Complex Vehicles”
